Emeka Rollas, President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), has announced plans to meet with members of the association to develop a collective response to the Federal Government’s directive to eliminate money rituals, smoking, and crime scenes from Nigerian movies.

Rollas’s statement comes after Shaibu Husseini, Executive Director of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), confirmed that the government had issued a ban on such scenes. 

Expressing personal support for the directive, Rollas emphasized that his view does not yet reflect the official stance of the AGN. He acknowledged the government’s concern that these scenes could glamorize harmful behaviors, potentially leading to negative societal impacts.

“The government is right to be worried about the portrayal of actions that could do more harm than good in our society,” Rollas said. “However, we need to ensure that the AGN’s response is a collective one, representing the views of all our members.”

The AGN plans to hold discussions to align on the issue and to consider the implications for the film industry. 

This meeting will be crucial in determining how filmmakers can balance creative expression with social responsibility.
