Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim conceded that his side “deserved to lose” following a shocking 1–0 home defeat to Everton, despite the Toffees playing more than 75 minutes with ten men.

Amorim was brutally honest in his post-match assessment, calling the performance “really bad” and highlighting a dire lack of intensity.

He acknowledged that United “lost balls that we cannot lose” and failed to impose themselves, especially after Everton’s early sending off.

The Portuguese coach admitted that he fears a relapse into last season’s struggles, saying: “I feel afraid of returning to this feeling of last season… we were not ready.”

He also warned that United remain “nowhere near” the level required to compete for the top positions in the Premier League.

Amorim even expressed a strange admiration for Everton’s fighting spirit, despite their numerical disadvantage. He stated:

“Fighting … is when you lose the ball and you fight because you know we will suffer a goal … I hope my players, when they lose the ball, fight each other.”

Former Manchester United full-back Gary Neville was scathing in his response, labeling the performance “unacceptable” and accusing the Red Devils of complacency. He argued that Amorim’s tactical rigidity — sticking with a back-five despite holding a man advantage — contributed to the collapse.
