UNIPORT VC Meets NANS, Constitutes New SUG Electoral Committee Following Executive Dissolution

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Professor Princewill Chike, has constituted a new Students’ Union Government (SUG) Electoral Committee (ELECO) following the dissolution of the union’s executive council.

Speaking on the development, the Vice-Chancellor’s Media Aide, Godwin Ajah, said the decision followed a disagreement involving the dissolved SUG executive, the Chief Judge, and the Speaker of the Students’ Representative Council over the constitution of the electoral committee, which was expected to be inaugurated on Friday, July 17.

Ajah explained that the disagreement stalled the electoral process and prompted the university management to intervene by dissolving the executive and setting up a new electoral committee to ensure a smooth transition and the conduct of credible student union elections.

He also alleged that the dissolved executive was involved in the misappropriation of union funds, describing it as one of the factors that informed the university’s decision.

The development followed a meeting between the university management and representatives of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), during which issues surrounding the students’ union leadership and the electoral process were discussed
